Elementary Program: 5 to 9 years

Having five-year olds included in our elementary class has truly enhanced the program. Older children are given opportunities to grow as leaders; younger students are motivated to emulate their older classmates. Academics are self-paced and students follow an individualized work plan, meeting our basic requirements at their own level, through their own interests.

During the elementary years, children are seeking to understand the world and their place in it. Maria Montessori's "Cosmic Curriculum", the fulcrum of the elementary program, is designed to guide children through an exploration and assimilation of Earth, past and present. The areas of curriculum are woven together to facilitate an integrated educational experience tailored to the needs of the student. In all of their studies, children move from the research of concrete objects to a more abstract, generalized knowledge of nature and society.

The curriculum and rate of learning are tailored to the individual student, and emphasis is placed on the fostering of academic and social responsibility within an open environment. Each student's academic education is detailed in an IEP (individualized education plan). The elementary program provides students with the necessary skills to teach themselves about the world around them.

Curriculum: Language arts, including grammar and creative writing; advanced practical life; art, music and drama; health and nutrition; physical education, including yoga and dance; sciences including botany, zoology and chemistry; history and geography; math and geometry.
